- Nagano Amateur Radio Alive
！So many people out today!! Big thank you to Faces who I almost don't recognise, but voices that are familiar - JA0FSE, JJ0NVW & several other operators. These days amateur radio and the underlying technology seems to be forgotten. We all make good use of Cell phones, internet, digital TV etc but please don't forget the important 'understanding' part^-^若者の色んな勉強になて、つまらない事がアマチュア無線で面白くなる。For youngsters too it can make something that's boring to study into fun. Hope to make lots of new friends...Why don't you join us on the air waves too?
- Iwasuge-Yama Heaven
The most detailed map I could find wasn't good enough (below):Massive day out, after getting lost and walking around Higashiyama Skifield for 2hours I finally found the forest walk start point...from there it was a 6hour walk. The man below had the same problem as me:There were around 200 people on the trail (who didn't get lost ha ha).You never know where you'll come up - if you're like this mole (below)Looking back and watching a man who was actually in the midst of making a new map, it was quite easy to find the way....ha ha in hind sight!!Seeing the vast area of many different autumn colors, we all felt very lucky to be up there. Our view was about 20km across from Iwasuge yama.Along the way were some very bright sparks, who exchanged all sorts of ambiguous comments - great fun行けるかどうか、心配だった。。。
- Star Gazor: 「
2010.09.19 SundaySo many fruit orchards around the Nagano basin mean that at night it's ....er....dark.Sometimes it feels pitch black, well until you look up...If you do look up this is what you might see:Today we had planned to swim at the Sun Marine Pool in Nagano, but stopped at amateur radio firends house on the way to exchange QSL cards.Amateur or 'Ham' radio operators send cards to prove they actually communicated from point A to point B. Some times Ham's are very proud of these cards and me too. Contacts by radio are often in different languages and often to & from un-usual places like the International Space station, Siberia, ...an arctic expedition etc.So today's operator was also NOT YOUR USUAL CHARACTER, Matsuzawa-san JJ0FXP & lovely wife JJ0FXQ are always amazing to talk to, especially on air. Today they showed us 2 great aspects of Nagano - fresh fruit, beautiful scenery & a hobby to last a life time: astronomy. I don't know anyone with more enthusiasm or knowledge about the remote places we never think about.JJ0FXP-san explained that they were just studying an explosion that was about 100 million times bigger than our gallaxy....I am not sure how big that actually is, ...but got the feeling it was worth atleast 5minutes of our time.Check out some of his pictures here. From star charts to eggplant evolution (below), it was interesting to compare the scale of things. These eggplant things liked like blueberries, as they had revolved back to they original size (before farmers had played around with breeding/genetics):For 2 younsters, the scales of the blueberries below was just right...Nagano must be one of the most fascinating places I've seen, simply an abundance of fresh fruit, berries, vegetables, wine & beer along with so many very interesting characters embedded in the woodwork...it's a break away from the standardized Tokyo & Kyoto population. Can you see the interest the kids have in this picture? We borrowed a telescope, ate dinner early, and some blueberry jam^-^ then just as the clouds parted had the most beautiful view of the moon. Looking at moon through the telescope felt like looking at a 10meter diameter ball from 50meters away - very very close.2 young daughters who had been fascinated & totally absorbed with fruit picking during the day, were now set on doing laps around the moon....or so I thought...so asked 「月様を一周して来る」”Do you want to do a lap around the moon?"The answer came back before I had finished asking: 「宇宙全文を１００周回する」 "100times round the whole universe"...I just don't have enough words to describe how totally absorbed we were with all this Nagano Natural Science....er ....and eating today. If you are keen to see some of this, please ask and we'll try to show you^-^
- Bird-man Pek's + Monkey Girls^-^
2010.08.30 MondayVery entertaining morning for 2 of our Palace Hotel staff, and my daughters.I don't think I have every seen a more photographed para-glider jump!! - 5 of us holding cameras as Mr Pek & pilot Shimizu-sensei tookoff.Apolygies must go to Mr Pek though, because we were supposed to chase/race him down the mountain, but unfortunately we just had to take that last group photo, and then one more....and one more...So we only got the take-off shots...but it was vert entertaining and hope we can jump from the top sometime soon.

- Portable HF Antenna on Air!!!
- Inspiration from JA0FSE
2010.04.04 SundayGreat to get community support from local Ham operators, really interesting guys, each with different skills & input^-^ This is a portable 3 band HF 7,14 & 21MhZ antenna that JA0FSE put together. Will be exciting to try on the mountain in the near future.
Again, so nice to have such community support. I hope this helps others become interested in technology & our people related issues. Thanks Kobayashi-san (JA0FSE)

- Tahiti !!!
Wow, after helping some visitors from Tahiti yesterday,...
Showing them down to 'Isami-zushi'...
Today by coincidence, I had to pick up a different 'Isami' couple from Yudanaka station and was happily surprized to see my new Tahiti friends standing beside Isami-san (which I didn't realize at the time).
My big friend reminded me so much of the 'bus-stop Totoro' in the anime Totoro - he smiled and leaned over and took the necklace off his head, and smiled even more and outstretched to me...
his big smile got me...so I had one too
Merci - friend
